Remember when we had just dropped to 1-5, and lost Jamaal for the season? This was the joke: “In the 2016 NFL Draft the Kansas City Chiefs are now on the clock.”
Now it’s not just four straight wins – but four very dominant wins. It started with West going for more than 100 yards against the Steelers (securing a very important tiebreaker against them.) Then of course the game we all got to enjoy – the total dismantling of Detroit.
Then it was a trip to first place Denver, and our total humbling of the Donkeys on their turf. And then last night we single-handedly made Chargers fans not all that sad about the prospect of their team moving north to Los Angeles.
Alex Smith hasn’t thrown a pick in forever, and he’s playing like more than just a game manager. He’s a game winner. The offensive line suddenly looks viable. No Jamaal, no problem. West and Ware (who?) are both capable of tearing off big runs, catching passes out of the backfield, and finding the end zone on a regular basis. And that’s to say nothing of Knile Davis, who we also know can play.
And then there is the defense. How on earth did this defense give up 30 points in three straight weeks? They look like the ’85 Bears and the 2000 Ravens right now. What a turnaround. Hali looks like he did five years ago. Houston is playing like he did one year ago. Eric Berry looks like he never had cancer. Marcus Peters looks like a veteran shutdown corner. Derrick Johnson looks like he could go another five years. And coordinator Bob Sutton has them playing better than any unit in football.
I am more optimistic now, at 5-5 and with no Jamaal, than I was after that week one win. This Kansas City Chiefs team has shown that it will not let adversity get it down. This Kansas City Chiefs team has shown that it will fight and fight and fight, and then fight some more. This is a Kansas City Chiefs team that we can be proud to call our own.
We may still face stumbles. We may still miss the playoffs. But all of those people who were ready to throw in the towel and swear off their allegiance just one month ago owe this team an apology. They are the team we hoped that they would be.
