It seems like the dust may have finally settled on the Chiefs roster moves. I was tempted to put together this round up on Saturday but something in the back of my head told me to hang on a couple of days. With a few question marks around the team, it was obvious that Brett Veach was going to make moves that meant only a few names on the Chiefs original 53 could sleep easy on Saturday night.
And so it come to pass that Reid and Veach would make the necessary moves:
- QB Matt McGloin was on the original 53 but was released after Chase Litton cleared waivers and made the practice squad.
- Parker Ehinger was released after OL Ike Boettger was picked up from waivers from the Bills.
- Former Chiefs safety Ron Parker is back on the team after his release from Atlanta, Daniel Sorenson was moved to IR to make way.
- OL Austin Reiter was claimed after his release from the Browns; the casualty? Brian Witzmann.
So here is your 53 for now:
Patrick Mahomes and Chad Henne.
Kareem Hunt, Spencer Ware, Damien Williams, and Darrel Williams.
Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Chris Conley, Demarcus Robinson, De’Anthony Thomas and Marcus Kemp.
Eric Fisher, Andrew Wylie, Mitch Morse, Laurent DuVernay-Tardiff, Mitchell Schwartz, Cam Erving, Jordan Devey, Austin Reiter, Ike Boettger and Khalil McKenzie.
Travis Kelce and Alex Ellis.
Chris Jones, Allen Bailey, Xavier Williams, Derrick Nnadi, Jarvis Jenkins and Justin Hamilton.
Justin Houston, Dee Ford, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Breeland Speaks, Anthony Hitchens, Reggie Ragland, Terrance Smith, Ben Niemann and Dorian O’Daniel.
Kendall Fuller, Steven Nelson, Orlando Scandrick, Tremon Smith and Charvarius Ward.
Eric Berry, Ron Parker, Armani Watts, Eric Murray and Jordan Lucas.
Harrison Butker, Dustin Colquitt and James Winchester.
Admittedly, this isn’t the most comfortable I have ever felt about a Chiefs roster going into a season. Although listing Andrew Wylie as the starting left guard I am not sold that the Chiefs are completely happy with that position. Eric Berry is currently listed as day-to-day meaning he could potentially miss some time, is there adequate cover for him? I’d say no. The cornerback situation has been the talk of the Kingdom ever since Marcus Peters was traded. What has followed could be regarded as borderline negligence.
That being said, it hasn’t been all bad this offseason. The accusation of Fuller in the Smith trade seems like a stud move, Derrick Nnadi looks like he could be a monster in stopping the run, Tyreek Hill is ready to make the jump to true super stardom, and of course there is the emergence of new crowd favourite Ben Niemann.
Don’t be too surprised to see another move this week, especially in the secondary. The Chiefs currently have $11M in cap space, more than enough to make a splash here or there.
Cough* Bashaud Breeland Cough*.
We’ll soon find out if this season pans out as expected; a high scoring attack and a very leaky defence. Can this formula make a Super Bowl run? Probably not. I think they are at least an offseason and a mini rebuild of the defence away.
