The story so far

The Chiefs continue winning, even though it was a less than convincing performance against a fairly putrid Raiders team. A number of games this season have fallen under the catagory of “a better team would beat us today”. The Ravens are a better team. They have a top tier defence and can run the ball. A potential recipe for disaster for the Chiefs that need to keep winning to get the No 1 seed and homefield advantage through to the Super Bowl.

Ladies and gentlemen, your playoffs start here.

One to watch

Eric Berry. Again

Will he play? He’s been limited in practice, I’d like to think he’ll play in a limited capacity here in prepeeration for another huge game on Thursday night. Will they take that chance or just leave him for the Chargers game? He’d be a massive addition against the run in this game but there are 3 tough games in quick succession coming up.

Key Matchup

Pat Mahomes v A top pass defence.

Possibly the best defence we’ve played against this season? They don’t create many turnovers but they are fundamentally very sound and give little away. Mahomes will need to remain patient and take what he can. Or he could produce some magic…

What they said

Jerry Rosburg, Ravens ST coordinator

I think everybody that’s watched them recognizes the performance by the Kansas City special teams. The thing that’s remarkable is they’re good at everything. Their return game is good, their coverage has been excellent, their field goal kicker is playing at a very high level, their punter has been doing exceptionally well, [and] they’re limiting return yards on punt return like no one else in the league.

What we said

Bob Sutton:

I would say, for players and coaches, it’s a whole different challenge. We have elements of what they do in most games – I wouldn’t say every game – but most games, because most people have the zone-read concepts or the RPOs and that stuff. When you do it as your kind of base – they have that and they have a way of just powering the ball at you, too – you have to rethink how you are playing, what your techniques are and all those things because you are asked to do different things. You have different concerns and different pressures as an individual player and also, structurally, as a defense.”
