Possible Playoff Scenarios

Well, there’s two weeks of the season to go. The Chiefs and Chargers have both already qualified for the playoffs. Time to have a look at who could possibly join them. There is a huge caveat here that my mind has melted from the many possibilities and there quite possibly are some mistakes in amongst this. Having said that, I’m confident enough in the results. Grab yourself a stiff drink and lets dive in…

Chiefs 11-3

Already qualified for the playoffs.

Possible seeds #1 and #5

Remaining games

Seahawks (A) Sun 23rd 8:30pm

Raiders (H) Sun 30th 1pm

To get the #1 seed need to do equal to or better than the Chargers.

To get the #5 seed need to do worse than the Chargers.

The Raiders game is crucial. Win that and it gives the Chiefs the Division record and Conference record tie breaker over everyone. The Seattle game effects neither of those. Need to win both to be certain of the #1 seed though.

Chargers 11-3

Already qualified for the playoffs.

Possible seeds #1 and #5

Remaining games

Ravens (H) Sat 22nd 8:30pm

Broncos (A) Sun 30th 4:25pm

To get the #1 seed need to do better than the Chiefs

To get the #5 seed need to do equal to or worse than the Chiefs

The Ravens game on Saturday night is almost worth staying up for. If the Chargers lose then the Chiefs would only need to win 1 of their 2 games to take the #1 seed. If the Chargers win both, then the Chiefs need to win both otherwise Chargers take #1 seed and the Chiefs drop to #5.

Texans 10-4

Win their Division with a win in either remaining game.

Possible seeds #1, #2, #3 and #5.

Remaining games

Eagles (A) Sun 23rd 1pm

Jaguars (H) Sun 30th 1pm

To get the #1 seed need to do better than both the Chiefs and the Chargers

To get the #2 seed need to do better than the Patriots

To get the #3 seed need to do worse than the Patriots but still win 1 of their remaining games.

To get the #5 seed need to win either of remaining games. Colts or Titans must win both their remaining games to stand a chance of winning the Division and Texans must lose both for that to happen.

The Eagles game will be a fascinating one, I think it will the be 6pm game on Sky for us. Eagles coming off a win at the Rams and playing for playoff survival. I fully expect the Texans to beat the Jaguars in the last game of the season.

New England Patriots 9-5

Win their Division with a win in either remaining game.

Possible seeds #2, #3 and #4.

Remaining games

Buffalo (H) Sun 23rd 1pm

Jets (H) Sun 30th 1pm

To get the #2 seed they must do better than the Texans.

To get the #3 seed they must do equal to or better than the Steelers and Ravens

To get the #4 seed they must not lose both games and Miami win both games.

The Patriots end the season with a pair of home gimmies against poor divisional opponents. They should win both. Seeding will likely come down to either #2 or #3, depending on the Texans results.

Pittsurgh Steelers 8-5-1

Win their Division with 2 wins.

Possible seeds #2, #3, #4 and #6.

Remaining games

Saints (A) Sun 23rd 4:25pm

Bengals (H) Sun 30th 1pm

To get the #2 seed they must win both games and Texans and Patriots both lose both games.

To get the #3 seed they must win both games, Texans lose both and Patriots lose either game.

To get the #4 seed they must win both games, Texans and Patriots both win their games.

To get the #6 seed they must win less than the Ravens and equal or better than the Colts, Titans or Dolphins

Steelers miss the playoffs if they do worse than the Ravens and either the Colts or Titans. Or if they lose both remaining games and Miami wins both of theirs.

The Steelers have a tough trip to New Orleans. Fail to win that and the Division is up for grabs. Would have thought they would beat the Bengals at home, but they could still miss the playoffs even then if other results go against them.

Baltimore Ravens 8-6

Win the Division if they do better than the Steelers in remaining games.

Possible seeds #4 or #6

Remaining games

Chargers (A) Sat 22nd 8:30

Browns (H) Sun 30th 1pm

To get the #4 seed they must do better than the Steelers.

To get the #6 seed they must do equal or worse than the Steelers and equal or better than the Colts and Titans.

Crucial game against the Chargers on Saturday night. 2 wins and they are guaranteed a playoff place.

Indianapolis Colts 8-6

Possible seed #6

Remaining games

Giants (H) Sun 23rd 1pm

Titans (A) Sun 30th 1pm

To get the #6 seed they need to do better than Ravens, Titans and equal to or better than the Dolphins.

Huge last game for them against the Titans. Possibly playing for the last playoff place.

Tennessee Titans 8-6

Possible seeds #2, #3, #4 and #6

Remaining games

Redskins (H) Sun 23rd 4:30pm

Colts (H) Sun 30th 1pm

To get the #2 seed they must win both games, Texans lose both games, Patriots lose both games, Steelers and Ravens lose once.

To get the #3 seed they must win both games, Texans lose both games, Patriots win either game, Steelers and Ravens lose once.

To get the #4 seed they must win both games, Texans lose both games, Patriots win either game and Steelers or Ravens win both of their games.

To get the #6 seed (if the Texans win either of their games) then they must do better than the Colts, Steelers and Ravens.

My head hurts. I’m fairly sure I’m right here but the Titans have an outside shot at the Division but face a both teams must win last week game against the Colts (my pick for the early slot on Sky that week).

Miami Dolphins 7-7

Possible seeds #3, #4 and #6.

Remaining games

Jaguars (H) Sun 23rd 1pm

Bills (A) Sun 30th 1pm

To get the #3 seed they must win both games, the Patriots lose both games, Steelers lose both games and Ravens lose both games.

To get the #4 seed they must win both games, the Patriots lose both games and the Steelers or Ravens lose either of their games.

To get the #6 seed they must win both games, Patriots lose once and then Steelers or Ravens lose both games then Colts lose both games and Titans lose to Washington. Er, I think.

I don’t see the Patriots losing both home games. The Dolphins are an outside shot at best.

Cleveland Browns 6-7-1

Possible seed #6

Remaining games

Bengals (H) Sun 23rd 1pm

Ravens (A) Sun 30th 1pm

To get the #6 seed they need to win both their games, Ravens lose both games, Dolphins lose a game, Titans and Colts to lose a game then tie their last game of the season.

So, you’re saying there’s a chance!

My predictions

Chiefs and Chargers both lose this week and win the final week.

Texans lose to Eagles then beat the Jags.

Patriots win both their games.

Steelers lose to Saints and beat Bengals

Ravens win both their games.

Titans win both their games.

#1 Chiefs

#2 Patriots

#3 Texans

#4 Ravens

#5 Chargers

#6 Titans
